10 years ago I was 11 years old and in 6th grade starting middle school. I was one of the tall goofy kids in middle school, I was quite and didn’t talk much, the only sports I cared about was football cause it was the only thing I was really good at. 10 Years ago if you went up to every kid at Crofton middle school and asked who there favorite basketball players was 99% of them would say Michael Jordan, I would be in that 1% that didn’t care cause I didn’t like basketball. Remember I was a tall goofy kid that had no coordination, I hated basketball and didn’t want to be around it, I thought it was just a bunch of thugs and was ran by the African American race, which I don’t care about but I thought I had no opportunity to excel at the sport. Then one day I was over at my cousin’s house watching a Sacramento Kings basketball game. From that day on I became a fan of basketball and carried one with me everywhere I went, and the reason was because of a Jason Williams, the 6-1, 180 pound point guard. I will always remember that first game of his; he threw two no-look passes and a bounce pass with one hand across the court. Today I still have every game that Sacramento played on TV on tape from his first three seasons. I would watch the games over and over and try to learn the game and play his style of basketball. My first year trying out for the Crofton 12U basketball team I was cut from the team, and I never wanted to hoop again I remember crying in my moms room saying I hated the game and couldn’t wait till football. The next day my cousin came over to take me to the local elementary school to shoot around and work on my game and I refused, until he went into his car and pulled out a Jason Williams poster, and for some reason out of nowhere I wanted to play again. (I could change my mind on a snap). For the next whole year I watched every Kings game on TV and thought myself how to play the game. And from there on the rest is history, I became great at playing the game and my friends still make fun of me for always trying to make that fancy pass trying to resemble my man JWill.
Now I can not miss any basketball game that’s on TV I love the sports, but over the last 10 years I cant think of a more entertaining player in the league, sure theirs Kobe, Lebron, Dewayne and the rest of the great players that are great performers but when it came to entertaining the crowd and the league Jason Williams runs them. He would do things that other players were scared to do and that was throw no looks and behind the back passes in situations when he shouldn’t have but they worked, but those anent even the plays that make him, the long one handed bounce passes were a thing of beauty. He was a mix tape alone even before And-1.
Thanks For the Great 10 years of basketball and entertainment, but props for leaving the game on you own terms.
